Formerly a U.S. Army military fort, the Presidio closed as an active base as part of military reduction program under the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) progress. It transferred to the National Park Service in 1994 and now is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

The Presidio seems a world away from urban life with its landscape, golf course, the National Cemetery, and various historic and cultural structures. Starting at the top of the Lyon Street Steps, the route of this hike offers vistas of the bay and forested scenery, and passes by the golf course, Mountain Lake, and National Cemetery. The route also traverses by the Spire and Wood Line, two art installations by renowned artist, Andy Goldsworthy. Although partially burned in 2020, the 100-foot-high Spire remains largely intact and stirring.

The trail travels around 6 miles on paved and dirt-sandy terrain and includes walking up varying hillside topography. This walk is not for everyone, as the degree of difficulty is rated as Moderate for active hikers and Difficult for others less accustomed to hills and the distance. The route has an elevation gain of approximately 1,000 feet. Estimated walk time is roughly 2.5 hours.

Event is limited to 20 people. The hike is free, but you must register and pay a $10 fee to reserve your spot. The reservation fee will be refunded at the tour. A waitlist will be made available for cancellations. NO REFUNDS for cancellations after July 26.

Consider layering for the weather and bringing water. Ample street parking typically is available around the meeting spot at Broadway and Lyon. The 3-hour parking limit there may not apply on Sundays.

Optional lunch at Colibri after the Hike - Those interested can join us at the nearby Colibri restaurant in the Presidio. Colibri is an attractive modern Mexican bistro offering a brunch and lunch menu, including vegetarian-vegan options. Link for restaurant is: https://www.colibrimexicanbistro.com/

Colibri is located about a 5 minute drive or a 25-minute walk from the Lyon Steps where the hike will terminate. We will arrange carpools as possible for those without a car.

Lunch will be from approximately 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm. If you wish to join us for lunch, please pay $20 to reserve your spot. This helps us arrange the correct number of seats at the restaurant. Limit is 14 people. A waitlist is available for cancellations or possible additional seats.  At the restaurant, we will return the $20 to you in cash. Please bring some cash to help settle the bill. Restaurant indicated multiple checks likely could be provided for our group.

Deadline for the lunch reservation is July 24, 2024. No refunds will be allowed after July 24. To reserve a spot for the lunch, go to: https://maxsf.org/event-5788785
