Join event champion Jim Tom to see Drum Tao on its 30th Anniversary Tour at Zellerbach Hall in Berkeley. A feast for the eyes and ears, Drum Tao’s mesmerizing productions combine thunderous traditional taiko drumming with dazzling staging, theatrical costumes, and dramatic lighting effects. The international troupe of 40 performers has seemingly done it all, having collaborated with the Bolshoi Ballet, staged sold-out productions off-Broadway, appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and at the Olympics, and even recorded for Universal Music. Flute, marimba, and harp are added to the drum ensemble for dramatic effects, and high-octane choreography contributes fresh new energy to this centuries-old Japanese art form. “Extraordinarily talented percussion artists, and they’re seductive, alluring performers” (Chicago Tribune).

Optional Pre-show Dinner - Those interested can join us at the nearby Alborz restaurant at 2175 Allston Way (corner of Oxford St) for a pre-show dinner beforehand. Alborz is an attrative Persian-Middle East restaurant serving up traditional and popular dishes at reasonable prices, including charbroiled kabobs, lamb shank , dolme, and Fesenjoon. Vegetarian options are available although limited.

Alborz is located about 2 blocks or a 5 minute walk from the Downtown Berkeley Bart Station. Alborz also is about 15 minutes from Zellerbach Hall.
Dinner will be from 6:00-7:30 pm, giving us enough time to walk to the event at the nearby Zellerbach Hall located about 15 minutes away.
If you wish to join us for dinner, please pay $20 to reserve your spot. This helps us arrange the correct number of seats at the restaurant. Feel free to join us for dinner even if you purchased tickets independently of MAX. Limit is 14 people. A waitlist is available for cancellations or possible additional seats. At the restaurant, we will return the $20 to you in cash. Please bring some cash to help settle the bill. Restaurant indicated multiple (not individual) checks could be provided for our group.
