You have lived in San Francisco for how many years and you likely have been to Grant Avenue several times. But have you really seen Chinatown? Look again to see what you’ve missed! Chinatown is a whole thriving community, apart from the tourist attractions. Temples, association buildings, the alleys you always walked by - all are part of the history and culture of Chinatown, even the fortune cookie factory and the site for the acclaimed Empress by Boon.
Join MAX for an illuminating guided tour of the oldest Chinese community in North America. Our tour will be conducted by Bob Yeargin, an experienced guide who has given this tour for more than 20 years. We will meet at Portsmouth Square by the flagpole on the upper level near the elevators to the garage (off Washington St). Portsmouth Square is on Kearny Street between Clay and Washington Streets. The tour will last about two hours, and the route is relatively easy, traversing mostly on level streets along the hillside. We will have an optional lunch afterwards. Hope you can join us!
Space is limited to 15 people, but a wait list will be available. Event is $8/person. NO REFUNDS. Deadline to register is April 12. For additional information, contact event champion, Jim Tom at: jim.tom@maxsf.org
Street parking is available but tends to be very limited in the area. An underground public parking garage sits below Portsmouth Square and is accessed from Kearny Street. Rate is $4/hour.
For MAX events that feature alcohol, we strongly encourage you to take public transportation, a cab/Uber/Lyft, walk, or have a designated driver. Please drink responsibly.
